Brian and I did the yellow circle on one eye and a blue rectangle on the other, and I was thinking of that girl the whole time. I would watch TRL and kind get all of my little inspiration. I lived in Mississippi, in a really small town, so a lot of times I just had to get creative and find things in my closet or hope that I got something for my birthday that I asked for. My family didn't have a ton of money, but they were very encouraging of me being an individual. I definitely got made fun of for outfits I would wear, but a lot of the times it was from me seeing something on MTV and trying to make my own version of it at home. The singer, 34, has been experimenting with a variety of shades since she was a pre-teen — and she's never looked back.

"For vibrant colors, you need a really light base for the true tones of neon oranges and pinks to shine and make a statement," she explains. "The lighter the blonde [underneath], the brighter the color." At the moment, Hayley Williams has shoulder-length bleached blonde hair, with blunt bangs cut straight across her forehead.

Still, true to the spirit of their can-do partnership, O’Connor quickly got on board with the idea and now operates his own stylist chair at Fruits when he’s not on the road or working on Good Dye Young. Connor also revealed that he achieved the blonde with the duo's vegan lightening kit from their line of hair-care products, Good Dye Young, which launched in 2016 and came to Sephora in 2018. With about a decade of releasing music, Paramore is one of the rock scene’s most influential bands.

We kind of know what the look is for the next album, but we're taking advantage of this time where we're transitioning into this look. I don't wanna say it’s a character, because it's me, but Brian and I are going to have a lot of fun with some Jane Asher and Brigitte Bardot, ’60s and ’70s beehive hair moments. It’s been a vehicle to display how she's feeling without words, especially when she’s been dealing with things in her personsal life that she doesn’t want to share with the public. But with hair colors and styles, she could do, well, something. “When Brian and I found each other, we got to experiment with what it means to present yourself to the world,” says Williams, sitting in O’Connor’s chair as they workshop their vision for Paramore’s return IRL.

“I asked Brian to change my hair about eight or nine times in 2014 because I was going through some things, and that’s what we do, you know? She colored it twice in one day when Paramore appeared on Good Morning America that year, she reveals, and she also cut it shorter than it had ever been before ahead of the band’s tour. As animal advocates – O’Connor lives on a 17-acre horse ranch – they were also committed to the entire brand being cruelty-free and as sustainable as possible. It was decided early on that Good Dye Young would only work with manufacturers that didn’t test their products on animals.

Paramore recently opened for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, during which Williams' says she likes to keep her backstage room filled with incense and herbal tea. "Brian was very adamant that I learned to own that — because for a while, it just started to feel like it belonged to the world," Williams tells InStyle over Zoom. "It was just another note or a line in an article about Paramore. Like, 'Oh, the flame-headed Hayley' or 'fire-headed Hayley Williams.' I think I started to resent that." I have a few early memories of flipping through my mom's magazines and seeing Gwen Stefani and thinking, “Oh, I need to not have any eyebrows.” So like most young girls in the late nineties, I tweezed all my eyebrows off and looked absolutely ridiculous. That was where it all began — and now their brand is available in Ulta stores. Both Williams and O’Connor note that one of the highlights of running the salon has been providing a comfortable space for anyone – inclusive of all races, sexualities and gender orientations – to get their hair done.
